When touring around Alert Bay, you probably want to do so by vehicle as the island is very hilly. Within the U’mista Cultural Centre, connected to Alert Bay via boardwalk, victors will enjoy 16 kms of walking/hiking and biking trails. Keep an eye out for Culturally Modified Trees. For centuries, Nations have stripped the bark of cedar trees to make baskets, fishing nets, rope and clothing. Take in the carefully handcrafted and detail-oriented art of the local first nations. Their art is known and appreciated worldwide. Often victors are amazed and speechless when they are lucky enough to witness the ocean animals of Cormorant Island. Salmon, dolphins and whales, all share the ocean that they take home in the bays alongside the island. During the 1970s Alert Bay was a booming fishing and logging town with fleets of ships in the town's harbor. Today, because of overfishing, the salmon runs are nowhere near the size they used to be. High water levels behind the makeshift dams drowned many trees, leaving a forest of dead standing wood. Which allowed fires to spread rapidly causing even more harm. The people of Alert Bay recognize their mistakes and try to improve systems to better the future of this close-knit community.
