Barriere is a beautiful municipality located in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District of British Columbia. With a population of just over 1700 people, Barriere is the perfect size for those looking for a relaxed and friendly community. The municipality spans 10.73 square kilometers and is home to stunning natural scenery. There is a difference in opinion where the name derived from. Say will say it described indigenous fishing techniques, and some will say it was used to describe how difficult the river was to cross by early fur-traders. The museum notes the town was founded in 1828, however we now the indigenous people have called it home for thousands of years. In 1924 the town established a post office and a railway station. The town is primarily driven by forestry, along with tourism and agriculture. In the late 1800's gold was found in the region and was mined using the placer method. The closest hospitals are in Kamloops and clearwater which are both less than hour away. From hiking and biking trails to fishing and hunting, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Barriere.
