Canal Flats is a beautiful municipality located in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. With a population of 802 and an area of 11.07 km², it is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors. From hiking and camping to fishing and canoeing, there are plenty of activities to enjoy in Canal Flats. In the early years, canal flats was a mining town with a 70-ton concentrator to the mine. The mine shut down in 1893. During the canal construction a hotel was built to house the 200 workers, eventually when the construction was finished, so was the hotel. In the early 1900's forestry started to boom in the Canal Flats area, bringing new life to the village. Since early 2010 the town has shifted from a logging town to a supporter of high-tech and trades. Three provincial parks surround the town, providing kilometers of untouched nature to be discovered. The quaint town has an Elementary school, post office, grocery store, cafes, markets, senior centre and a food bank. Families utilize the many ski hills that surround the town. Fairmont, Panorama and Kimberly are all under an hour away! take in river rafting with Kootney River Runners, or swing for the hills at one of the local golf courses in the area.
