Esquimalt is a municipality located in the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. It has a population of 17,533 and an area of 7.08 km². The name Esquimalt comes from a local First Nations expression 'Es-whoy-Malth", which means the place of gradually shoaling water. The town boasts two main recreation facilities, the Archie Browning Sports Centre and the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. The town offers many programs to their community. Such as; learn to skate, hockey schools, public skates, curling, roller derby and broomball. Step aboard a charted fishing tour that specializes in salmon and halibut fishing. After you finish a day of fishing, kick back at the Lighthouse Brewing Company and try their locally brewed beers. If you have a few too many, don't worry because part of Esquimalt's go green initiative has helped them to implement bike lanes throughout the city. In town you have easy access to the nearby Galloping Goose Regional Trail, a 55km multi-use trail connecting Victoria to Sooke. Explore cultural cuisines downtown like sushi, Chinese, Indian, Vietnam, African and of course seafood. Esquimalt is a great place to live, work, and play. It is home to a variety of businesses, a thriving arts and culture scene, and a variety of recreational activities.
