Gold River is a municipality located in Strathcona Regional District in British Columbia. It has a population of 1246 and an area of 10.92 km². In the mid 1900's Gold River was a typical logging, pulp and paper industry community. But before that the area around Gold River were prominent fishing grounds for the Mowachaht people. Gold River today is home to the highest peak on Vancouver Island, the Golden Hinde. The peak is popular for experienced back country climbers and is only 25 kms from Gold River. The mountain was named after Sir Francis Drake's ship, the Golden Hind. Other popular activities in the area are the Nootka Island Trek and hiking the Elk Lake trail. People come all the over the world to accomplish these difficult feats. Explore the Upana caves and rock climb at the Crest Creek Crag. Gold River has a marine west coast climate with warm dry summers and mild rainy winters. If it snows it usually doesn't stay for long. Only an hours drive to Campbell River, Gold Bridge is perfectly situated on the west coast of the island.
