About

The Municipality of Greenwood is located in the Kootenay Boundary region of British Columbia. With a population of 702, Greenwood is a small and friendly community with a lot to offer. Set in a picturesque mountain setting, the municipality covers an area of 2.42 km². In 1895 the first log store was built by a man named Robert Wood and he named the town Greenwood. Before that in 1886 the area had many mining claims in the Boundary Creek region. Following the log store in 1895, the following year there were three hotels, a general store, a livery stable, an opera house and a dozen other local settlements. by 1899 the railway reached Greenwood and the population boomed to 3,000 people. by 1910 the mining boom had passed and the towns population depleted by half. At the time of incorporation, Greenwood was the smallest town in British Columbia. Towering above the town you can still see the huge slag from the BC Copper Company Smelter that closed in 1989 after the price of copper plummeted. Today people mostly come to Greenwood for the history lessons or they have romanticized about small town living. The town where everyone knows everyone and there is one place to grab coffee. Even with the towns small population they hold special events for the town and work together to keep the community strong.
