Kaslo is a municipality in the Central Kootenay region of British Columbia. It has a population of 1049 and an area of 3.01 km². In 1889 settlers came to the area and used it as a sawmill site but soon the silver boom happened and the town expanded. Today the town's economy is supported by the forestry and tourism industries but has kept the old school feeling from the mining days. In 1942 Kaslo was selected as one of the sites throughout BC for internment of Japanese Canadians then moved to New Denver. the boom of the silver industry slowly faded and then the widespread collapse of mining activity, the town has remained a quaint place ever since. Kaslo has a curling rink, skating arena, disc golf course, baseball fields, golf and horseback riding club. Along with many trails for hiking and biking, a community garden , public library and historical sites. If visiting the area have a stop at The SS Moyie Historic Site. A beautifully restored sternwheeler that came to the area in 1898. It serviced the Kootenay Lake for 59 years and finally rests In Kaslo for people to visit and learn from. Hike to Fletcher Falls if you need to stretch your legs while driving or are looking to do something outside that is easy for the kids. Downtown Kaslo has shops, restaurants and even their own brewery. Enjoy everything this little mountain town has to offer.
