Before European settlers the islands were home to tens of thousands of aboriginal people. This area has a rich history of living with the land and resources. Haida Gwaii was the first place recorded in British Colombia by European settlers in 1774. In the 1800s the only visitors to the area were fur traders and the first non-Haida settlers arrived in the early 1900s.
