Nanaimo is a regional district and city in British Columbia with a population of 99863. It has an area of 90.45 sq km. Nanaimo is a beautiful city located on the east coast of Vancouver Island. It is known for its stunning natural scenery, including the Nanaimo River, mountains, and forests. The city also has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with many artists and musicians calling Nanaimo home. This coastal town was developed on the coal miner's dream, selling coal to Victoria. In the mid 1900s the forestry industry supplemented the dwindling coal industry. Today the pulp mill is still a big employer in Nanaimo and injects a lot of it's revenue back into the community. Everyone loves to visit the ocean, so people from far and wide vacation in Nanaimo, making tourism a huge part of their stable economy. The city has over 180 km of trail networks woven in-between and around town among many community parks and gardens as well. Nanaimo's Aquatic Centre is home to the largest wave pool in western Canada. The city also has another pool, complete with a lazy river, waterslide and spray features. Unique to this area is a seasonal outdoor pool at Westwood Lake Park! Fun Fact: The Nanaimo bar which is a no bake, custard filled cookie bar was named after Nanaimo, British Columbia.
