Oak Bay is a municipality located in the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. It has a population of 17,990 and an area of 10.52 km². Oak Bay is part of the traditional territories of the Coast Salish people of the Songhees First Nations. The name comes from a tree found throughout the area; Garry Oak Tree. Oak Bay was originally developed as middle class streetcar suburb of Victoria and was incorporated as a municipality in 1906. The town services many dwellings along the shores and in the inlets off the coast of the island. At the time, it was the only town in the area with a police station, post office, schools and churches. Since the 20th Century, Oak Bay has been considered to have many recreational opportunities. Popular hobbies include scuba diving, cycling, birding, cricket, kayaking, lawn bowling, tennis and more. Oak Bay is also home to the oldest marina in Western Canada, the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, founded in 1892. Sailing the Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands is a spectacular adventure, any sailor would love to be apart of. Book a whale watching tour to set your eyes on pods or orcas, possibly a Grey or Humpback Whale, seals, sea lions, otters and many more ocean creatures. if you're downtown Oak Bay stop in at the 49 Below Craft Ice Cream parlour. They specialize in small batch ice cream using fresh and simple ingredients. Many restaurnts cooking up decadent sea food, local bakeries, wood oven pizza places and ethnic food from many regions. Oak Bay is a fun, beautiful place to call home.
