Sayward

Sayward is a municipality located in the Strathcona Regional District of British Columbia. With a population of 334 people, it is a great place to live if you're looking for a small town experience. The municipality has a total area of 4.44 square kilometers. This seaside community is situated at the base of the Newcastle Ridge and the mouth of the mighty Salmon River at Kelsey Bay. Sayward is home to the K'omoks First Nation people. The residents of Sayward are proud to live work and play here and also share the northern area with visitors that come to the island. Walking along Sayward's Working Waterfront will quickly give you an idea about the industries here. Commercial fisheries, forestry, and services have a lot to offer the residents of Sayward. The walking path also gives a glimpse back into time when settlers came to the area. Enjoy the "spots of interest" and history provided along the walk. Keep an eye out for orcas, steelhead salmon, bald eagles and even black bears. Everything from cruise ships, container traffic , fisherman and more travel up and down the Johnston Strait. The Kelsey Community centre has a swimming pool, weight room, gymnasium, parent and tot program multi-purpose room and much more. A popular challenge is to hike Mount H'Kusam, a 23 km loop that gives views of the entire area. Popular activities are canoeing, kayaking, paddling, fishing and camping. Feast on fresh seafood, decadent bakeries and even enjoy a meal on a floating restaurant! Sayward is a little haven from the rest of the world and a very special place to live.
