The Elk River flows through town and it is known for world-class river fishing, the ElK Valley is also known as one of the greatest hunting areas in North America. With the Rocky Mountains on either side, locals and visitors flee to the mountains for snowmobiling in the areas of Elk Valley is Coal Creek. Only thirty minutes from Sparwood is Fernie Alpine Resort, along with backcountry and cross country skiing in popular in the area.
