The quaint municipality of Telkwa is located in the Bulkley-Nechako Regional District of beautiful British Columbia. With a population of just 1474 people, Telkwa is the perfect getaway for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Settlement in the area began around 1904 just up the hill in the town of Aldermere. Around 1907 residents began to move down the hill to be closer to water supplies and to be on the route of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The word Telkwa means "muddy river", referring to the it's colour in the spring. Tour the Telkwa museum and walk through some of the historic buildings (still being used), to learn more about Telwka's history. Telkwa's slogan is "where the rivers meets and friends gather", they are referring to the Telwka river and the Bulkey River meeting just on the towns edge. The Bulkey River is well known for world-class steelhead fishing. Convince a local fisherman or hire a guide to give you the epic experience of steelhead fishing in the Bulkey. If you're into alpine lakes, then Telkwa is a great place to start. The Bulkley Valley has an entire group dedicated to providing advice , improve trail conditions backcountry hiking, skiing, biking and snowshoe trips. Residents enjoy the Smithers golf course, just 13 kilometres up the road, along with the disc golf course. Surrounded by stunning nature, visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing, and camping in the great outdoors. Telkwa is also home to the popular annual Telkwa Barbecue, which draws in visitors from all over the province. Telkwa is a great place to call home!
