Vernon is a beautiful municipality located in the North Okanagan region of British Columbia. With a population of 44519, it is a great place to live, work and raise a family. The area is 96.43 Km² and there is something for everyone to enjoy. Vernon's growth as a city started in the late 1800s when the Pacific Railway was opened to the Okanagan. Fur traders and miners all tried to make the Okanagan Valley Home. In 1876 one of the most well-known farmers came to the area, Cornelius O'Keefe , along with two others they established a ranch at the head of Okanagan Lake. In 1890 fruit growing by Lord and Lady Aberdeen kicked off the fruit growing industry. Soon Vernon was the largest city in the Okanagan Valley with a hospital and bank. Today Vernon is a diverse community supporting many economic industries and providing services for the area. Vernon has a large aquatic centre, multiple ice arenas, recreation centres, in-city parks, beaches and many great outdoor recreation venues to be used. Silver Star Ski Resort is located 22 Kilometres outside of Vernon and provides residents and guests with downhill skiing and snowboarding, x-country ski trails along with hiking and biking in the summer months. Vernon is home to the Vernon Vipers Hockey Team, a junior A team who plays in the BCHL. Vernon hosts many winter and summer arts and culture festivals that include live music, artisan booths, food trucks, kids entertainment and more. Residents enjoy having easy access to larger cities like Kelowna and Vancouver. Three provincial highways connect Vernon, making it easily accessible.
