About

North Cowichan is a municipality located in the Cowichan Valley Regional District in British Columbia. It has a population of 31990 and an area of 195.41 km². It is the largest municipality in the Cowichan Valley Regional District. Located on the east side of Vancouver Island, close to Duncan and Ladysmith, North Cowichan has a vast landscape of beaches, rivers, lakes and forested areas. It is also known as the "community of communities' because it services and includes, Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay and the South End. The town was incorporated in 1873 and the economy originally benefited from the fur trade, fishing, mining and forest industry. Today things have shifted slightly. The forest industry is still a contributor to the economy but retail, construction, manufacturing and health are large contributors. There are many activities to try and take part in when exploring Cowichan. Some that stand out to us are: hiking Mount Tzouhalem, mountain biking at one of the four world-class trail networks, kayaking in Maple Bay, fishing the Cowichan River, or maybe even kite surfing on Nitinaht Lake. If sailing is your passion, then have exploring the many inlets and harbors in the area. Many harbors off the coast of BC have restaurants and cafes to ease the hunger or quench the thirst, after a long day at sea. Fun Fact: in 2020 the BC Government designated The Cowichan Valley as an official wine-producing area. Take a vacation or secure a slower pace of life in North Cowichan.
